Institutions in France
The political, economic and cultural institutions of France reflect the country’s rich and diverse history. Between the French Revolution and the Fifth French Republic of 1958, the country witnessed a multitude of regimes. Today it is balanced between a presidential and parliamentary system. France has an interesting constitutional history as one of the first countries to put the constitutional principle into practice. Its myriad institutions will provide insight into the system of government of this leading European country.

| Nice Actilangue School is a centre for French as a foreign language. The Actilangue School teaches French to foreigners and offers all year round French courses of high quality. The school was established in 1977 by Paul Ceccaldi. He is the Executive Director of Actilangue and is responsible for all aspects of the programme. Michel Durand is the Director of Studies. The Actilangue’s building is located in the centre of beautiful Nice, just a stone’s throw from Hotel Negresco. The beach and the beautiful and world famous Promenade des Anglais are just a few metres away.

| The Assemblée nationale (National Assembly of France) is the main part of the French parliament. It includes 577 voting politicians who represent different parties and are elected every five years. At present, the biggest parties the Assembly include the Socialist Party (Parti socialiste), the National Front (Front national), the French Communist Party (Parti communiste français), The Greens (Les Verts) Union for the presidential majority (Union pour la majorite presidentielle) and the Union for French Democracy (Union pour la démocratie française). The National Assembly of France works from the great Palais Bourbon, which is situated on the left bank of the river Seine. This palace itself is a pearl of architecture.

| The Bibliotheque Nationale de France is the national French library. All publications and books published in France may be found here. This institution was established by King Charles V, the Wise, in 1368. Later, the library was developed by Louis XIV and the institution changed its name to the Imperial National Library. The most recent remodelling of the Bibliotheque Nationale de France began on the initiative of President François Mitterrand in 1988, and is now managed by the French Ministry of Culture.

| The Bibliothèque Polonaise de Paris is the main Polish library in Paris. It boasts of one of the largest collection of Polish books and documents outside Poland. It was founded in 1838 and then enlarged and developed. The most famous books stored in this library are De revolutionibus orbium coelestium, by Nicolaus Copernicus, as well as Polish Medieval chronicles. There are also great collections and exhibitions devoted to well-known writers of the Romanticism period, as well as the great Polish music pianist and composer Frédéric Chopin.

| The Centre culturel Franco-Japonais – Espace Hattori is a hub of Japanese culture near the city centre of Paris. The institution is situated at Passage Turquetil in the 11th district, close to Nation Square. Centre culturel Franco-Japonais, managed by Sachiko Hattori, was opened in 1993 and is responsible for promoting Japanese art and culture in France, including its language and calligraphy. It often organises different exhibitions with masterpieces designed or created by Japanese artists. The institution is open Monday to Saturday, from 12am to 6pm. Reservations are recommended.
