Hermitage Amsterdam is a dependency of the Hermitage Museum of Saint Petersburg. It is located on the Amstel river and occupies the former Amstelhof. The building is truly one of the best examples of classicist architecture in the city, built between 1681-1683 as a home for the elderly. At first it was meant to be a shelter solely for women, but later it welcomed also men. It was designed by architect Hans Petersom. After renovations carried outin the 19th and 20th Centuries, not much remained of the original interior of Amstelhof. In order to provide accomodation for married couples as well, the Reformed Congregation built the Corvershof on Nieuwe Herengracht in 1723. In 1888, an extension joining Corvershof to Amstelhof was built. The design for the interior is done by Hubert-Jan Henket (responsible for the extension to the Teylers Museum in Haarlem) and Wim Crouwel. Henket is a well-known designer and former director of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in
