A visit to Square Ambiorix will be a delightful experience for the lovers of formal gardens with geometrical layout in almost perfect symmetry. The name of the square is a tribute to the Belgian national hero, the Gaul, Ambiorix, who belonged the resistance of a Belgian Gallic tribe against the rule of Julius Caesar. The Ambiorix Park is placed in the centre of the Belgian capital city, in the heart of the European district. The construction of this site was a result of a town planning scheme of the north-eastern district.

Situated in the heart of the Anderlecht district in Brussels, Astrid Park is a wonderful public green facility, perfect both for a relaxing walk and for more sport-like activities such as jogging or even football playing at the Vanden Stock Stadium which is on the park’s premises. The R.S.C. Anderlicht soccer club plays its home matches there since 1917. Astrid Park has not always been carrying this name. Initially, when the park was inaugurated in 1911, it was called Parc du Meir but the mayor of Anderlecht took the decision to rename it Astrid Park in memory of Astrid of Sweden, who died in an awful car crash in 1935.

In the characteristic of Belgium style of double-naming, the largest urban park of Brussels is called Bois de la Cambre and Terkamerenbos in Dutch.. Although a bit removed from the central parts of the Belgian capital city Bois de la Cambre is annexed to the city and is linked to it by a large road, Avenue Louise lying between its northern entrance and its southern border. With the Soignes Forest the park takes up about 123 hectares or 242 acres. The terrain has many diverse features including a wonderful lake with an island, numerous shady trees that give it its forest image and vast lawns for enjoying a lazy afternoon. The serpentine pathways that criss-cross the park are a prefect route for a long walk, a bike-ride, a jog or even a horseback riding experience.

Brussels Park is the green spot in the European city of the same name that one can hardly miss. Located at the far end of the Brussels agglomeration, in the Forest district, Duden Park with its 23 hectares, is the largest urban green facility on the district’s premises. At the beginning of its existence as a park it was called Bois de la croix (Wood of the Cross) after the stone cross which still can be seen at the intersection of Brussels and Mystery streets. The park covers the steep right slope of the Seine River valley and its highest summit stands at about 90 metres, whereas the lower parts are at about 55 metres. Thus, the Duden Park offers a great panorama, emphasised by the broad lawns that stretch on the north.

Park Elisabeth is one of the parks in Brussels that have its particular symmetrical shape. Its layout includes a double avenue that provides the length of a suitable walk; the possibilities of a nice relaxing stroll are extended by the bordering lateral lawns with tree and bush groups. Sycamore maple trees border the main double path on the side of the Avenue du Panthéon and the beginning of Leopold II Boulevard is surrounded by magnificent plane trees.

Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam is one of the greatest minds of Medieval Europe and he left a bright mark behind not only at his home town – Rotterdam in Netherlands, but also at every place he went. Thus, the house where he lived in 1521 in Anderlecht, a district in Brussels, was turned into a museum in 1932. One of the most spectacular features of the Musee de la Maison d’Erasme (Museum of Erasmus’ House) are the gardens adjacent to the buildings.

Enclosed between the avenues E. Mounier and Ideal you'll find one of Brussels botanical treasures, namely the botanical garden adjacent to the Catholic University Louvain and the public park that surrounds the garden. The Plant Garden was established in 1975 at the time when the Faculty of Medicine of the UCL was moved to the district Woluwe Saint-Lambert, north-east of the centre of Brussels.
