| Madrid is said to be one of the greenest capitals and biggest cities in the world with over 40 urban parks. Yet there are greener spaces within the city itself and its eastern part is truly one of the most natural territories with its multitude of smaller and larger parks and gardens. An essential element of this system is the 20 hecatre large park Campo del Moro (Field of the Moor) that is situated on the right, eastern bank of the river Manzanares that crosses Madrid. An important feature of Campo del Moro is the fact that it belongs to the system of gardens adjacent to the Royal Palace, along with other well-manicured gardens such as the Sabatini Gardens. Campo del Moro is located behind the impressive edifice of the Palacio Real (Royal Palace), whereas

| The citizens who live in the westernmost part of Madrid have a huge advantage over the ones that live in the urban heart – they have at their disposal one of Madrid's largest green areas called Casa de Campo (House of the Field). Situated on the right bank of the Manzanares River, just outside the city, next to the ring that goes around Madrid, it is easily accessible which makes it one of the most popular places to spend one’s weekend. Because of its vicinity to the city and its seclusion at the same time, visitors are offered one of the greatest vistas upon the urban part of Madrid; especially from the park's hill, Monte de el Prado. Covering more than 1,700 hectares, Casa de Campo is not only a green pearl in the crown of Madrid’s parks and gardens, but also offers various attractions, such as row-boating in the lake or visiting the zoo and the amusement park that can also found within the boundaries of Casa de Campo. In administrative terms the park is l

| Barcelona, the capital city of Catalonia, has a lot to be seen in regards to gardening. It also has a long tradition of botanical gardens dating back from the 18th Century and the city has not stopped developing it since that time. On the Montjuic Hill, there are two botanical gardens: the Historical and the New Botanical Gardens, both operating nowadays (the Historical one was reopened to the public in 2003).

| Although Jardin del Parroco Sanchez Camara is a wonderful city park, it is called a garden, presumably because of its small size. In size, it’s not even a tenth of the Retiro Park, which is the largest park of inner Madrid, but it still provides a valuable island of green for those tired of the concrete walls of the city. Found in the Arganzulela district in the inner southwestern ring, the Garden of Parish Priest Sanchez Camara offers a nice casual place to sit back and enjoy the hot Spanish afternoon. Besides, there are installations for children to play at the park, and just in the south-western corner of the green there is the Plaza Santa Maria de la Cabeza.

| Another splendid garden in the Montjuic Park, dedicated to a famous Catalan poet and priest is the the Father Cinto Jacint Verdaguer garden, that stretches downwards to the Dante Square and its wonderful sculpture of the author of 'Divine Comedy'. One can reach the garden walking down a pleasant peaceful path branching from the road from the Castell de Montjuic. Although the garden is worth visiting in all the seasons it is at its best during the spring when the multitude of the bulbous flowers bloom and leave the spirit of freshness all around. There is a magnificent sculpture by Ramyn Sabi on the garden’s premises being an inspiration stone with verses by Verdaguer engraved on it.

| Jardines de las Vistillas (Vistillas Gardens) are a wonderful park in the eastern part of Madrid, and is very close to the large green space Casa de Campo, as well as neighbours the Royal Palace near the Manzanares River. At first, the Vistillas Gardens were known as the Vistillas Hill of the San Francisco Basilica (due to the proximity of the marvellous church) and for its higher position and the view it presents towards the Casa de Campo Park and the river Manzanares. At the end of the 19th Century the property passed into the hands of the church and a seminary was founded. In the 1920s, the place was a spot of a melon marketplace. Later, the park was landscaped featuring two sections – a hilly one and a grassy one. The first section includes a couple of lovely fount

| The location of the Royal Palace in Madrid is rich in formal green spaces and one of them is the Garden of the End of Noval. This garden owes its name to the monument erected there in the memory of soldier Luis Noval Ferrao in 1912, designed by the famous Valencia sculptor Mariano Benlliure. The impressive stone and bronze sculpture measures six metres. The Noval Garden is a part of the Plaza del Oriente (East Square) situated to the east of the Royal Palace and separated only by Balien Street. The square features a great collection of stone sculptures, arranged so that they resemble a leaf, and are dedicated to the rulers of Spain. These sculptures were made with the purpose of decorating the Palace, but they were so many that some of them have been placed even outside of Madrid. Jardines del Cabo Noval is situated in the northern section of the East Square and is a ple

| The Lepanto Gardens (Jardines Lepanto) are a part of the East Square (Plaza del Oriente) situated on the east of the Royal Palace in Madrid (hence the name of the square). The Lepanto Garden is a formal piece of gardening that lies on the southern side of the square, and on the northern side there is the Garden of Noval with its spectacular monument of the soldier Noval. The Lepanto Garden also features an impressive monument commemorating a national hero: Captain Angel Melgar. This sculpture was the work of Julio Gonzalez Pola, made out of bronze and marble, and was inaugurated in 1911 by Alfonso XIII. The name of the Lepanto Garden comes from the name of the place where a series of famous historical battles were fought with the participation of a strong Spanish fleet. On the garden’s premises visitors can not only find peace among the lovely trees and flowers, but the
