Beginning of Monaco
1297 January 7
Francois Grimaldi of Genoa seized the fortress on the Rock of Monaco after disguising himself as a monk and thus entering the fortress from where he called his troops to seize it.
1400s
The sovereignty of Monaco was officially recognised by the French king, the Pope and the Duke of Savoy.
1524-1641
The Grimaldi family allied with Spain and thus Monaco was under Spanish control.
18th and 19th Century
1793
During the French Revolution the Grimaldi family were expelled and Monaco becomes a part of France.
1814
Monaco was given back to the Grimaldi and was under Sardinian protection until 1860.
1861
Monaco regained its independence with the treaty between Monaco and France.
20th Century
1911
The first constitution of Monaco was written to ensure that the prince share his power with the elected National Council.
1923
Prince Rainier was born.
1929
The first Grand Prix in Monaco was held and the winner becomes the British William Williams.
1949
Louis II, prince of Monaco, died and was succeeded by his grandson, Prince Rainier III.
1956
Prince Rainier married the Hollywood actress Grace Kelly. They met in Cannes during the film festival in 1955.
1959
Prince Rainier dissolved elected National Council due to a dispute over the budget.
1962
Prince Rainier restored the National Council and appoints a new liberal constitution.
1963
The French residents of Monaco became liable for French taxes.
1982
Princess Grace died in a car accident.
1993
Monaco became the smallest country in the United Nations after it joined the organisation.
21st Century Monaco
2002 April
The Monaco Constitution was revised and succession law was changed to keep the Grimaldi on the throne even if Prince Albert had no heir.
2002 August
A huge floating jetty is installed in Monaco and it doubles the capacity of the local port.
2005 April 6
Prince Rainier III died at the age 81, nearly a month after he was hospitalised with a lung infection. His fairy-tale marriage to Grace Kelly added glamour to the old dynasty of Garimaldi.
2005 July 12
Prince Albert II becomes the successor of his father as ruler of Monaco.
2005 November 19
Prince Albert II formally becomes Monegasque King after the official and pompous ceremony.
2007 February 1
Gian Carlo Menotti, an Italian composer and a Pulitzer Prize winner, died in Monaco. His operas included ‘The Medium’ (1946) and ‘Amahl and the Night Visitors’ (1951).
