Slovenian Cuisine

Slovenia usually surprises visitors. It lacks the popularity of Greece, Turkey, Italy or other south-eastern tourist jewels, but flourishing under the Adriatic sun it offers warmth and beauty. Cuisine here is most famous for its large variety of breads and desserts. It has been influenced by various cultures, especially Austrian and German. Balkan features are also discovered in both cooking and eating habits. Briefly, Slovenia is a charming country between East and Central Europe.

Slovenian cuisine is far from being homogeneous. The different regions of the country are unlike each other in many aspects regarding climate, neighbouring countries and geographical situation and conditions. The large green valleys, for instance, are where the best kinds of traditional breads are made. The east, in the Prekmurje region, still carries strong Hungarian influences, especially in the goulashes that are traditionally served here. As for the Adriatic coast, local recipes are mainly based on seafood and fish with Mediterranean influences and exotic spices. Austrian and German cuisine primarily influenced the west, while the Balkans had a strong impact on cooking in the east of the country. Therefore, it is truly difficult to define Slovenian cuisine. Instead, let's take a look at some of the tastiest traditional dishes served in Slovenia.

Slovenia boasts some of the best breads in Europe. They exist in sweet versions, with various fillings; there are also special recipes for special occasions. The struklji, for instance, can be stuffed with sweet fillings, but also made with meat or different vegetables. The potica is another traditional recipe and is largely known as a dessert. It's delicious and usually served with fruit or other sweet fillings. Equally popular, seafood and fish are prepared in many ways, most of which are borrowed from Italian or Croatian cuisine. Seafood dishes taste best with a local white wine. Also, grilled sausages are often served in many restaurants and they usually come with potatoes and various salads.
