Sport in Belgium

The location of Belgium on the Atlantic coast determines its climate as mild and humid in the winter and cool in the summer. Extreme heat and cold are rare here, which creates wonderful conditions for organising active holidays in all seasons. The seaside is a famous swimming and sailing destination, while the gentle landscape is ideal for walking and cycling tours. Numerous opportunities for active leisure time are present in the larger cities as well, where state-of-the-art sports facilities provide entertainment and physical exercise for everyone.

Walking
Walking is the best way to discover Belgium in its all facets. It allows you to encounter the varied and plentiful wild life in the national parks and nature reserves, visit some cultural points of interest or make a stroll through the traditional Belgian cities and towns. Walking tours mean both physical exercise and cultural experience. Don’t forget to make frequent stops to meet local people and enjoy their hospitality and, of course, try the world-famous beer and dishes in the traditional restaurants. The country boasts very well marked and maintained network of walking paths and routes, which is constantly expanding. There are different paths according to the length and level of difficulty. One of the most attractive areas, where walking trips are organized, is the Ardennes Mountain. Here you will find La Transardennaise, a 140 kilometres long footpath through the Ardennes from La Roche to Bouillon. The total distance can be covered in five to seven days. Maps and detailed information on walking routes are available at all local tourist offices.

Cycling
Belgium is a heaven for bikers of all ages and physical abilities. Due to the flat landscape, most of the cycling trails are undemanding and suitable for leisurely rides, but there are also some steep climbs in the Ardennes. The cycling network of the country is extremely dense. There are projects like RAVeL and TARPAN that provide old canal embankments and abandoned railway tracks resurfaced with a smooth material for the use of cyclists. The routes included are also suitable for hiking and horse riding. Full information for these networks is to be found at www.tarpan.be or in the local tourist offices. Very popular attractions among bikers are the guided sightseeing tours on two wheels, which are organized in all Belgian major cities. Tour operators offer bikes for hire as well as baggage transportation.
