Sport in San Marino

San Marino is one of the smallest countries in the world, but it offers some very attractive opportunities for an active holiday. The whole country is dominated by the 756 metre-high Monte Titano. It is surrounded by numerous hills - a perfect setting for outdoor activities such as walking, hiking and horse riding. The republic is situated close to the Adriatic coast of Italy and as a result, the climate is quite warm and humid. Active holidays and excursions to the Italian seaside are an inseparable part of every visit to the country.

Hiking
The landscape of San Marino is ideal for hiking. The gentle green hills and the steep rocky slopes of the only mountain offer ample hiking opportunities for those who want to escape the hectic city life and indulge in the tranquility of nature. This is perfectly combined with picnicking on the richly coloured meadows – an eco-friendly pleasure for the whole family. There are a few marked walking routes for all tastes and skills. Among the most attractive ones is the 2 kilometre-long round trip along the Castellaccio Footpath, where tourists can see wild animals and fortified castles. Another itinerary that deserves to be mentioned is the Old Railway and Laiala Footpath, which is the longest in the country totaling nine kilometres. More experienced and fit tourists can climb the top of Monte Titano and enjoy the spectacular view. For nature lovers, the Montecchio Nature Park is recommended.

Horse Riding
Horse riding is a popular leisure activity in San Marino. This is a wonderful way to explore the beauty of the landscape, have fun and at the same time, become acquainted with the most important monuments and points of interest. All of this ends with the delightful experience of tasting the famous Italian cuisine and wines. The centre of horse riding is called Pennarossa Stables. The facility offers fun riding lessons for both beginners and competitive riders, horseback trekking and saunters on the edges of Montefeltro. There is a Pony Club for small children.

Swimming
The Republic of San Marino is located only 30 kilometres away from the renowned Italian seaside resort of Rimini on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. Almost all tourists in this small country make at least a day trip to enjoy an unforgettable swimming experience. Due to the hot Mediterranean climate, the water is warm from May through October. Swimming can be combined with all watersport activities such as scuba diving, windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing and many others - it is simply a matter of choice.

Golf
Golf is another alternative when it comes to active holiday in San Marino. Quite understandably, the micro country cannot offer golfers a wide range of golf courses. In fact, there are only a number of mini-golf facilities and a few that are attached to big hotels. However, the latter are available only for the guests of that particular hotel. However, keen golfers will not be bored, because only half an hour drive away, in Rimini, there is a splendid 18-hole golf course with a full range of services – from equipment rentals to bars and accommodation. More information and technical details can be found at the website of the Rimini Golf Club www.riminigolf.com.
