Sport in Turkey
Turkey is a bridge between two continents, Europe and Asia. As such, it encompasses a vast variety of geographical zones – from the rugged mountains with year-round snow in the east through the dry hilly steppes and the land of fairy chimneys to the indented coastline with lush vegetation and magic hidden gulfs. These natural conditions determine Turkey as a land of excellent opportunities for active holidays in all seasons. With endless beaches and islands, remote hiking paths reaching more than 5,000 metres above sea level, virgin forests, clean creeks and lakes and warm sunny weather, Turkey awaits all who want to enjoy an unforgettable holiday.
Hiking
The magnificent Turkish landscapes tempt both nature lovers and mountaineers to make a walking tour in the countryside and touch unsuspected treasures. High mountains, plains and plateaus offer hiking trails of all lengths and levels of difficulty. Families and not-so-fit tourists can tour the numerous cultural and archaeological sites or visit nature reserves on foot. Mountaineers, however, will be spoilt for choice. The leading attraction for climbing is Mount Ararat, Turkey’s highest peak. Other well-known climbing sites are the inactive volcano Mount Erciyes in the centre of the country, the Kackar Mountains along the Black Sea coast and the Taurus Mountains in the south. All these peaks are higher than 3,000 metres and due to the severe conditions, it is obligatory to be conquered only after careful preparation and with experienced guides. Climbing is possible only in July and August.
Cycling
Turkey offers a striking diversity of cycling routes. There are a lot of opportunities for all bikers – from the easy alleys in the cities to the breathtaking mountain bike trails down the high peaks in eastern Turkey. This sport is quickly gaining popularity in the country among both professional athletes and enthusiasts. In the last few years some prestigious cycling competitions were held here. Generally, there are only few designated cycling paths, but this is not a problem at all since almost all provincial roads with little traffic are perfect for travelling on two wheels. There are some very good maps with all the routes, accommodation and points of interest marked that are available at www.tulumba.com, and also in some bookshops. A definite must for all bikers is one of the full array of guided cycling tours around Cappadocia – one of the most spectacular places on Earth.
Horse Riding
Horse breeding and riding are deeply rooted into Turkish culture and their way of life. In addition to this, the natural conditions in the country create wonderful opportunities to explore the beautiful landscapes and authentic customs by riding through Turkey from one end to the other. You can find ideal riding areas in Daday, Arac, Eflani, Safranbolu, Ulus and Devrek. Further riding opportunities are available at the big seaside resorts Marmaris, Kemer, Antalya, Side and Cesme, where adventure travel agencies offer riding tours in the surroundings as a complement to the lying on the beach. The specialised horse farms cater for tourists of all abilities and provide qualified instructors and guides.
Swimming and Watersports
When it comes to seaside holidays, Turkey is considered one of the leading destinations worldwide. With its numberless bays, islands and beaches, warm blue waters, sunny weather and cultural attractions, it offers conditions that are second to none. There are some world-famous resorts like Antalya, Marmaris, Kusadasi, Fethiye and Bodrum that provide first-class swimming opportunities, coupled with excellent conditions and facilities for all other watersports. Diving is especially popular because of the fascinating underwater world that is revealed off the shores of Turkey, including sunken ships and unique remains of ancient cities. Diving clubs and schools, where everything necessary is provided, are abundant in all resorts and towns along the coast. For the further pleasure of visitors, windsurfing, kite surfing and waterskiing are also available. The interior of the country is also ideal for watersports - hundreds of rivers provide great opportunities for water sports like rafting, canoeing and kayaking. The most famous is the River Coruh, renowned internationally as one of the fastest flowing rivers in the world.
