Belgium is buzzing with entertainment. It has an extensive variety of restaurants and cafes across the country and a vibrant nightlife. Brussels, the capital has over 80 bars and the place to be is the Place St Géry. There are numerous film and music festivals and concerts with jazz featuring prominently. They are held all over the country and not just limited to the capital. Belgium is famous for its contribution to the comic strip world, being the birthplace of characters Tintin and the Smurfs. There is a museum to celebrate the work of Belgium’s animators, but one of the best ways to revel in its cartoon past is to wander through the centre of Brussels where 18 large comic strip images decorate the sides of buildings.


Casinos can be found across the country, but players must be over 21 and carry proof of ID. The largest and most impressive casino is Grand Casino in Brussels. The dress code is smart and the gaming tables are open from 8 pm until 8 am. There are over 200 high-tech Las Vegas slot machines and in excess of 20 betting tables. The Casino also has what is alleged to be the trendiest restaurant in the Europe, La Madeleine, where you can watch award winning chef; Michel Doukissis cook through a huge glass window which looks into the kitchen.

Chocolate lovers should add a tour of the Belgium’s confectioners to their itinerary and there are plenty to choose from. The Brussels Onstage located beneath the Gallery Saint-Hubert offers the ultimate in chocolate experiences with an interactive demonstration of the origins and history of chocolate making in Belgium. If visiting during early April, you should attend the Choco-Laté Festival in Bruges. It’s a great opportunity to taste and view chocolate in all it’s of its many aspects. Chocolate is presented as an art form with sculptors, painters and body painters creating award winning masterpieces.

The beer culture in Belgium is unique and the country offers its visitors over 400 different beers and consequently there are a host of tours and tasting opportunities available for lovers of the amber nectar. There are beer festivals throughout the year, but one of the largest takes place at the beginning of March close to Antwerp. The Zythos Beer Festival in Sint-Niklaas, where there are a variety of staged entertainments and over 250 beers to try. The Brussels beer festival runs over three days at the end of August until the beginning of September and is centered on the Grand Place.

Belgium has a wide variety of amusements and theme parks. Oceade on the outskirts of Brussels is a fun-filled water park offering the widest selection of rides and slides in the country including the Hurricane, a slide which plummets from a height of 18 metres across an 80 metre distance. The ride is the fastest in Belgium taking a mere seven seconds to complete. Entertainment here does not centre solely round children and young people. Oceade is a year round resort centre offering a getaway from the winter cold. The temperature is kept at a pleasant 30 degrees and there are sauna areas, bubble baths and a relaxing room all for adults only.  Aquatopia in Antwerp houses over 10,000 fish and animals in one million liters of water. There are some interesting activities including a trip in a submarine and climbs amongst huge mangrove roots. Belgium is home to many attractive rivers and waterways and it is possible to take a cruise on a modern boat where you will pass many historical sites and scenic views. You can even combine a boat trip with a visit to a local brewery. Some tours travel between the beautiful cultural centres of Bruges and Gent, whilst others include a boat lift in their tour. Many of the trips take visitors into neighbouring Holland.
