San Marino hosts a diverse programme of festivals across the year and many have religious roots. The festival commemorating Saint Agata, the country’s patron saint, is one of the most popular. Held on February 5th, it features a colourful procession through San Marino old town. The Feast of the Military Corps on March 25th celebrates the start of a parliament elected by the people. On this day, the soldiers line up in full uniform in front of the Palazzo Begni and a memorial wreath is placed on the monument to those who died under the previous regime. A Mass is held in the Basilica and then there is a parade of all of the troops through the Old Town. The Feast Day of St Marinus is another saint’s day with a considerable celebration. Held on September 3rd, Mass is conducted in the St Marinus Basilica, and then the saint's relics are paraded through the city streets. Following this there is a crossbow tournament in Cava dei Balestrieri and a military band concert in Piazzale Lo Stradone. The day ends with a lottery draw and firework display.
