Nothing tastes better in cold winter evenings than the original German eierpunsch. As its name suggests (Eierpunsch means 'egg punch') this popular liquor is based on eggs and is similar to eggnog. The traditional recipe includes of egg whites, sugar, white wine and vanilla. Also some cream or custard can be added. It is extremely popular at the traditional Christmas markets, taking place all over the country from early November. It is served warm in large mugs.
1 bottle of red wine
4 eggs or 8 egg yolks
5 tablespoons of sugar
1 packet of vanilla sugar
lemon or lemon juice
Mix the sugar with the egg yolks, add a little bit of cold wine, and beat until smooth. Add some vanilla sugar, cinnamon, cloves, lemon juice and the rest of the wine and heat until boiled. Serve hot and foamy.
