Whiskey
Whiskey is an inseparable element of Irish culture and folklore. According to the legend, St. Patrick who taught the Irish people to distillate spirits, is the patron of whiskey. First mentions of whiskey come from the15th century when is was produced by monks solely for healing purposes. It was also commonly produced by farmers to make use of the grain that remained after the harvest.
It derives its name from the old Gaelic term
uisce beatha, which can be translated into English as 'water of life'. In contrast to ordinary scotch , Irish Whiskey doesn't contain malted peat, which makes its taste absolutely unique. Originally it is distilled from fermented grains of barley, rye, wheat or maize (corn) and then aged in oak casks . The most popular brands include: Old Bushmills, Power's, Paddy's, Tullamore Dew and Jameson's. It comes in various kinds such as: single malt, single grain and blended whiskey.
