The Musikverein was inaugurated by Emperor Franz Joseph in 1870. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra's New Year's Concert, broadcasted worldwide every year, is performed in the famous Golden Hall of the Musikverein. It is the permanent seat of the orchestra, and is air conditioned.

The hallmark of the orchestra are the Vienna Mozart Concerts performed in historical costumes. The choice of the setting, the program, the authentic costumes and wigs, the musicians' enthusiasm and not least the typical Viennese atmosphere, all contribute to create an ambience which makes the audience feel as though they had stepped back to the end of the 18th century. For those "Musical Acadamies", as concerts were called at that time, orchestras attempted to provide maximum enjoyment for the audiences by setting up their programmes of only the most popular pieces by various composers.
