Travel to Queensferry. In the past getting from Edinburgh across the Firth of Forth was difficult, so Queen Margaret established a ferry across the narrowest point, hence "Queen's Ferry". From here, drive to the Forth Road Bridge, giving you a great view to the 8th modern wonder of the world - the Forth Rail Bridge. At over 1.5 miles long, the bridge was until recently, the longest Cantilever bridge in the world.

Over the bridge you enter the Kingdom of Fife, a peninsula, surrounded by water on 3 sides the Firth of Forth, the Firth of Tay and the North Sea. This unique peninsula isolates Fife from the rest of Scotland and it remained semi-independent longer than other areas.

Shortly before Dunfermline, you will travel towards Kirkcaldy. From Kirkcaldy you enter an area known as the "East Neuk", its small fishing villages hugging the coastline are infamous as a paradise for smugglers.

Stop in Crail before a short hop to the medieval town of St Andrews, the capital of the Scottish Church for almost a thousand years and home to the oldest University in Scotland (600 years). This is one of Scotland's 4 ancient universities and is the school attended by Prince William.

St Andrews is most famously the home of golf, with the "Old Course" lying just off the town center, next to the long sandy beach, which was used in the opening credits of "Chariots of Fire". You will have 3 hours to explore this famous town.

From St Andrews, take a pleasant drive through the countryside of central Fife to Falkland. Falkland Palace dominates this old village, and was one of the main residences of the old Royal family of Scotland. Returning to Edinburgh you will cross the Lomond Hills and pass Loch Leven, where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned.
