Nightlife in France

France has a wide variety of entertainment available all over the country from nightclubs and bars to opera houses and theatres. There are all different kinds of entertainment found in the capital as well as larger towns and cities designed to suit all tastes. France is a country where the people “live to eat,” and consequently there is a diverse range of restaurants in every town city and village with many renowned Michelin Star eateries. However, there is much more to French nightlife than just a meal out.


The French love nightclubs and they are abundant throughout France with many located in the capital city Paris do not charge an entry fee, however prices for drinks are generally more expensive. You have to be 18 years old to gain entry. There are many different types of nightclubs, playing different genres of music and decorated in different styles. The Hip Hop and the Club land nightclubs are generally more popular for the younger generation (people aged 18-25). There are jazz and rock nightclubs where you mainly find an older clientele (people aged 25-40). Nightclubs are usually open at 10 o'clock and close around 5 o'clock.

France has a very strong café bar culture and there are literally thousands of quaint bars and cafes dotted around the country. Many offer pavement seating, which is perfect for watching the world go by over a coffee. Bars and cocktails bars are similarly popular and ideal for anyone looking for a quiet drink or meeting or a place to hold a rowdy night out. Many of the bars are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The most popular theme bars in the capital city are jazz bars, where jazz swing and modern music play non-stop. Other genres bars can be found are from Reggae to Techno.

Theatre, opera and the ballet all make great nights out, particularly if you are in Paris. The opera and the ballet houses attract many locals and tourists; there are three main opera houses located in Paris the biggest being the Opera Garnier. It houses all of the ballet performances, including productions of Orpheus and Eurydice. Many opera singers have performed in the Opera Garnier including Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli. There is a performance every evening, prices vary and it is advisable to pre-book as the shows are usually all sold out.
