Nightlife in Britain
England has much in the way of nightlife and many cities are full of life all night long. Apart from a cosy meal in a restaurant, you can enjoy a night at the pub, possibly participating in one of the organised pub games, or attend a concert and see one of the international music legends play. If you prefer a quieter or more cultured night there is a diverse range of cinemas and theatres or you can also partake in your favourite sport.
Britain is world renowned for its wide selection of pubs. These are places where local people go to eat, drink, play a variety of pub games, to watch television or just to socialise. Every town and city has lots of pubs – even villages will have at least one. They all vary in style and in the type of clientele they attract. Some may be themed pubs others may focus their entertainment on live music or satellite transmission of major league football matches. Within many small towns and villages, the local pub is more like a community centre. People gather here to play a range of traditional pub games like dominoes, darts and shove halfpenny or to participate in the weekly knowledge quiz.
Another popular night out for the young and middle-aged Britons is a night at a rock concert. All cities have a concert venue, which attracts a wide range of international performers; the most popular venue is London’s Wembley Stadium. Towns also have concert venues but tend to attract lesser known artists or those attempting a come-back tour. University towns also hold concerts within their own buildings and it is possible for visitors to purchase tickets. Many concerts in the summer are held in the open air in large parks.
Both young and old enjoy a night at the cinema in Britain and all towns and cities have at least one cinema hall. Indeed, many large cinema halls have been constructed at out of town sites, close to retail parks. Such cinemas offer around 10 different films to suit all tastes and ages. Inside, the cinema’s have comfortable seating and an array of fast food, snacks, drinks and ice cream available. Many cinemas are close to restaurants, even in the retail parks which allows people the opportunity to dine out either before or after the cinema.
