The boom in tourism in Castiglioncello started in the second half of the 19th C. when Diego Martelli, the famous Italian critic and patron of art and literature, decided to make it his home because of its mild climate and beautiful scenery.
Here, and until the end of the century, he abitually invited nearly all the Florentine impressionist artists of that period who subsequently became famous, giving birth to the legendary artistic period known as the "Castiglioncello School". Men of literature like Renato Fucini and Giovanni Marradi, the true Castiglioncello poet, also stayed here.Today it is one of the most famous coastal resorts on the Tyrhennian Sea, renowned throughout Italy and abroad for its beautiful scenery, for the quality and elegance of its facilities and for the highly esteemed cultural and social events the town promotes.
