Lower Austria
Lower Austria is one of the nine Austrian states. Its capital is Sankt Polten. It is also one of the youngest capitals in Austria. Some of the places that visitors should not miss is the Walchau valley, situated between Krems and Melk in the Mostviertel region. It is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site too. It is well known because of its beautiful landscape and wines. Another one is the Semmering railway. In the vineyard Pfeffel, in the heart of the valley, tourists can taste different kinds of wine as well as all the locally available specialties. Leisure activities lovers can enjoy cycling there. For those who are interested in culture, there are 600 museums, art galleries and monasteries. History lovers can see the remains from the ancient inhabitants of this territory – from the Romans to the Babenberg and Hansberger. Nature lovers could visit the two national parks – Donau-Auen and Thayatal as well as 22 nature parks.
