Zenica-Doboj
The canton of Zenica-Doboj is situated in the central part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, surrounded
by the Republic of Srpska to the north and east, Tuzla to the north-east, Sarajevo to the south and Central Bosnia to the west. This region enjoys the fame of being a paradise for nature lovers. It offers plenty of virgin scenery that is still unaffected by mass tourism. More than half of the canton's surface is occupied by dense forests and are rich in wildlife. The main river, Bosna, flows through the middle of the region and its picturesque valley represents a transport thoroughfare of increasing international significance. Similar to the rest of the country, there are many ruins, castles and other heritage sites from different epochs from the Illyrians dating back more than 2,000 years ago up to the present day. One of the most attractive and best preserved places is the Fortress of Vranduk near Zenica. The latter is the capital of the canton and its industrial centre. The city has been associated for centuries with the production of steel. The other bigger town in the region, Doboj, is primarily known for its recently restored magnificent fortress that was erected during the 14th Century.
