Bosnian Podrinje
Bosnian Podrinje is the second smallest canton in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in territorial aspect.
It lies in the eastern part of the country and is almost entirely encircled by the autonomous
Republic of Srpska. Only to the west does it border the canton of Sarajevo. The area belongs to
the geographical region of Podrinje, which encompasses the valley of the Drina River, plus the
surrounding mountain ranges. Therefore, the landscape of Bosnian Podrinje is predominantly
mountainous, with the whole territory being situated at more than 300 metres above sea level. It
offers plenty of virgin lands and spectacular scenery, but is still unknown to holidaymakers.
The Drina River, which flows through the centre of the region, abounds in fish, while its wooded
banks are ideal for hiking tours. This area has always been one of the most troubled provinces
of the Balkans. It is notorious for its battle scenes during the civil war that took place over the last decade of the 20th Century. The administrative centre of Bosnian Podrinje is the town of Gorazde, where the effects of the war are still clearly seen.
