Central Bosnia
Central Bosnia
The canton of Central Bosnia is situated exactly in the geographical centre of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is surrounded by the Republic of Srpska to the north, Zenica-Doboj to the east, Sarajevo and Herzegovina-Neretva to the south and Canton 10 to the west. As a result of its favourable location, the region is a first-class transportation hub and international crossroad. The landscape of Central Bosnia is formed by the easternmost reaches of the Dinaric mountain range, separated by several deep and narrow river valleys and gorges that attract an increasing number of alpinists and mountaineers in search of an adrenaline rush. One of the most fascinating features of the area is its ethnical and cultural variety. However, beside its charm and appeal, this variety has brought many troubles to local people. Winter tourism is well developed in the surroundings of Bugojno. The administrative centre, Travnik, originates from a Roman settlement established around 2,000 years ago. It is nestled below Mount Vlasic, one of the highest peaks in the country and is an emerging destination for ski tourism. The old Ottoman centre of Travnik is the biggest attraction for visitors.
