Herzergovina-Neretva
Herzegovina-Neretva is a canton in the south-western corner of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which
borders Croatia to the south, the Republic of Srpska to the east, Sarajevo and Central Bosnia to
the north and Canton 10 and West Herzegovina to the west. This is the only part of the country
that has access to the Adriatic Sea. The tiny Bosnian coastline is exactly 23 kilometres long,
but represents one of the most spectacular stretches of sand in the whole Mediterranean. The
only town here and main seaside resort of Bosnia and Herzegovina is Neum. Its extraordinary
surroundings and proximity to cosmopolitan destinations like Split and Dubrovnik in Croatia
facilitate its rapid development. In the vicinity of Neum there are abundant remains and
archaeological sites from the times of the Illyrians. The highlight of the season is the annual
international ethno music festival. The main river Neretva has formed a wide valley, which is the
focal point of urbanisation in the canton. The administrative centre, Mostar, is one of the most
important cities in the Balkan country. Its landmark is the Old Bridge, a medieval Ottoman bridge that connects the Christian and Muslim parts of the city. Together with the historical quarter, the
Old Bridge is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
