West Herzegovina
West Herzegovina is one of the smallest cantons in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It lies in the remote south-east of the country and borders Croatia to the south and west, the domestic cantons of Herzegovina-Neretva to the east and Canton 10 to the north. The landscape varies greatly and is dominated by the Dinaric Mountains that are parallel to the nearby Adriatic coast. A number of small rivers flow through the region and provide good conditions for agriculture and outdoor recreation. The other beneficial factor is the favourable climate that caters for dry sunny summers and mild winters. Valuable ancient Illyrian remains abound in the entire canton and bear witness to a historical epoch about which little is known. The administrative centre of West Herzegovina is the town of Siroki Brijeg, which is exclusively inhabited by ethnic Croats. The highlight in the cultural programme of the mountainous town is the annual film festival. The neighbouring town of Posusje is famous for its colourful folklore festival originating from the years of former Yugoslavia.
