Canton 10
Canton 10 is the popular name of Herzeg-Bosnian Canton, which occupies the western end of
the country. It shares a long common border with Croatia to the west. Its other neighbours are
West Herzegovina to the south, the Republic of Srpska, Central Bosnia and Herzegovina-Neretva to the east and the canton of Una-Sana to the north. Most of the area is characterised by a clearly mountainous terrain. The eastern foothills of the Dinaric Alps that run parallel to the Adriatic coast form an incomparable destination for nature lovers, keen hikers and those who seek virgin spots for extreme activities, such as rafting, canyoning etc. The rest of the canton is covered by extensive karst fields with scant vegetation and burning heat in summer months. Plentiful lakes dot the area, particularly popular being the idyllic Lake Busko. In the mountains above the town of Kupres modern ski facilities are constructed, but the resort still lacks international fame. In cultural aspect the region differs from the rest of Bosnia and Herzegovina, since here ethnic Croatians are the huge majority of population. The principal town Livno is beautifully dominated by imposing karst forms amidst the biggest field in the country.
