Burgas
Best known for its vast beaches and multitude of small-town resorts, the province of Burgas incorporates the country's second-largest city. Being largely industrialised, boasting a number of chemical production venues, and meanwhile being a vivid tourists' hub, the area is characterised by the Burgas Lakes. Set immediately at the Black Sea coast, Burgas Bay is Bulgaria's key port, incorporating a number of national reserves. Although the rural serenity of its seaside towns has given way to large tourist complexes and industrial development, there's still much to see and explore. Sticking to its Greek roots and having incorporated a network of military settlements during the Roman era, the area includes the ancient towns of Pyrgos (present-day Burgas), Mesembria (present-day Pomorie) and the ancient Castrition. The province's major town, Burgas, was shaped in the early 1800s, when it received a significant number of Greek refugees due to the Independence War of 1821.
