Kardzhali
Kardzhali, set in the mountains of Eastern Rhodopes, has an invariably scenic setting and predominantly Turkish population. Its main town is in the immediate vicinity of the Kardzhali Dam, halfway carved through by the Arda River and annexed to the Studen Kladenets Dam. Though of Neolithic origin, there was a large amount of Thracian artifacts discovered in the region, mostly ceramics and ritual objects. Among the Thracian cemeteries and shrines, the most significant is the tomb near the village of Nenkovo. The site is also thought to be of astronomical significance, as exactly at noon, on one single day of the year, a ray of light flows into the tomb at a particular angle.
