Montana
Set north of Stara Planina and south of the Danube, the province of Montana saw its heyday during the Roman era. As a constituent of the province of Upper Moesia, it hosted a military camp, which removed all traces of a presumably Thracian settlement. The province, as well as its major town, derive their names from the ancient Municipio Montanensium, a key municipality in the Roman province of Raciaria. Thus, the Montana hillsides are still adorned with an ancient citadel, the remains of residential buildings, baths and theatres. The Romanized Thracian population was mixed with Italic and Anatolian refugees. Later, the area received a number of Greek immigrants.
