Smolyan
Set in southern Bulgaria, on the border with Greece and right in the heart of the Rhodope Mountains, this province has recently developed into an excellent network of tourism venues, such as the ski resorts of Pamporovo and Chepelare, as well as the thermal spas of Devin and Beden. While remaining largely populated by Bulgarian Muslims, the region has distanced itself from ongoing religious disputes. Otherwise, the abundance of scenic villages, hiking trails and mountain vistas has triggered the development of much rural tourism and skiing. The area received annual flocks of international tourists, who often indulge in fishing, diving, skiing and hiking. Chepelare is home to the country's only factory for skiing equipment.
