Targovishte
Set in central Bulgaria, this province incorporates the municipalities of Antonovo, Omurtag and Popovo. Basically comprised of rural areas, and with its main town amounting to some 46,000 inhabitants, this part of the country has not been industrialised to a large extent, and agriculture is still the main source of income for many people. However, one can find a plethora of historical artifacts and remarkably beautiful nature here. Apart from hikes up Mount Preslav or a stroll on the banks of the Vrana River, one can spot several ancient dwelling places, 18th Century Revival architecture and the ruins of the Roman settlement of Missionis, unearthed only recently, in the year 2000.
