Yambol
Located in south-eastern Bulgaria, this province contains the valley of the river of Tundzha plus several hilly areas. Dating back to Neolithic times, and having later evolved into the strategic Thracian city of Cabyle, its major town, Yambol, saw its heyday under the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who dubbed it Diospolis. During the Medieval period, it received massive fortifications, which were eventually demolished in Ottoman raids during the 14th Century. Under the Turks, Yambol was a town of little significance. Along with the Unification of 1886, it gradually started to gain in importance, receiving a number of administrative structures, schools and cultural institutions. Currently, it remains a largely industrial town, which still has its ancient artifacts.
