Zagreb City
Zagreb is the capital, biggest city, political, economic and cultural centre of Croatia. The smallest but most populous administrative division hosts all major governmental institutions and is a continental transport hub. The city originates from 1094 and since then has always been a settlement of huge importance, regardless of its rulers. Zagreb's most famous landmark is the Gothic cathedral erected in the 11th Century. A number of palaces, squares and monuments create a traditional Central European ambience in this Balkan metropolis. Among the other tourist attractions in the Croatian capital are the electric railway, the picturesque nature park of Medvednica and Sljeme Hill, which is the leading winter resort in the country. Zagreb is an international educational centre, its university being the oldest and one of the most reputable in Southeastern Europe. The choice of cultural events and entertainment is superb, from theatre and opera, through open-air concerts to boisterous parties in nightclubs.
