Krapina-Zagorje
Krapina-Zagorje is the third-smallest of all 21 counties in Croatia, only falling behind Zagreb City and Medimurje. The region lies on the border with Slovenia in the northernmost part of the country. Unlike its neighbouring areas, the county, which comprises the larger part of the historical region of Croatian Zagorje, is a bit more mountainous, strewn with ranges of rolling hills. No wonder this is one of the preferred holiday destinations, especially by sportsmen and nature lovers. The marvellous scenery, endless vineyards, desolate romantic routes and country houses create an atmosphere that is second to none. Those interested in culture and history should definitely see the most famous archaeological site in Croatia, just outside the town of Krapina, where a 100,000-year-old Neanderthal man was excavated. The fossil site has been turned into a tourist attraction with a pleasant park and spectacular statues.
