Bjelovar-Bilogora
The county of Bjelovar-Bilogora is situated in Central Croatia, surrounded by Koprivnica-Krizevci, Virovitica-Podravina, Pozega-Slavonia, Sisak-Moslavina and Zagreb. The name of the region is derived from the name of its principal town, Bjelovar, and the imposing upland Bilogora, which dominates the landscape in the northern part of the county. The terrain consists of gentle idyllic hills, separated by a number of rivers and creeks. It is particularly fertile and suitable for vine-growing. The region is crossed by a dense network of specially designated cycling and hiking routes. Serving as the administrative centre of the area, the 15th-century town of Bjelovar is also its cultural and economic centre. A great monument in the town commemorates the soldiers who lost their lives in the Croatian War of Independence in 1991.
