Međimurje
The county of Medimurje is the northernmost part of Croatia. It's surrounded by Slovenia and Hungary to the west, north and east, while its southern border is with Koprivnica-Krizevci and Varazdin. Despite its small size, Medimurje boasts rare diversity to its landscape, from the easternmost Alpine slopes to the colourful fields of Panonia. Two of the biggest rivers in this part of Europe, Mura and Drava, flow through the region and create superb conditions for the development of agriculture, along with the high fertility of the land. Although predominantly rustic in character, this county provides plenty of historical sites in the countryside, above all the imposing Zrinski Castle in Cakovec and a host of similar estates and fortresses. A great attraction for visitors is observation and participation in authentic gold extraction in the waters of the river Drava near the village of Donji Vidovec.
