Primorje-Gorski Kotar
The county of Primorje-Gorski Kotar is situated in Northwestern Croatia, between Istria, Karlovac, Lika-Senj and the Adriatic Sea. To the north, the region borders Slovenia. This county has always been one of the best-developed tourist destinations in the country. As far back as the Middle Ages, many monarchs used to regard the coast around Rijeka and Opatia as their summer residence and built magnificent palaces and mansions here. Some of the finest beaches and bustling seaside resorts abound along the coastline and the four big islands that are part of the county. Primorje-Gorski Kotar is also renowned for its incomparable natural beauty, represented by the extensive mountainous area of Gorski Kotar. There are plenty of natural parks and protected areas within its boundaries, where tourists can enjoy lush vegetation, rich wildlife and crystal-clear lakes. Much of the region's territory, including the islands, is covered by a network of cycling routes. The ancient city of Rijeka, located on the coast of the Kvarner Bay, is the economical, cultural and transport centre of this part of Croatia. Its Baroque architecture, Roman remains and broad range of shopping, eating and entertainment opportunities make the city a first-class holiday venue.
