Lika-Senj
The central county of Lika-Senj is simultaneously the largest in territory and least populous administrative unit in Croatia. This is easy to explain, given the mountainous terrain between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Adriatic coast, where the region lies. It also comprises several islands, but few of them are inhabited. The landscape is perfect for nearly all kinds of outdoor activities, from swimming at the seaside to mountain-biking or rafting in the higher parts of the mountains. Extensive, sparsely populated rural areas where traditional local customs have remained intact are also of growing tourist interest. The leading attraction in Lika-Senj is the unique natural phenomenon Plitvice Lakes, which encompasses 16 interconnected lakes on a karst plateau. The astonishing national park is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Another highlight is the Velebit Nature Park, which comprises most of the mountain range of the same name and offers a stunning variety of flora and fauna.
