Osijek-Baranja
The county of Osijek-Baranja is situated in the north-eastern end of Croatia, on the borders with Serbia and Hungary. To the south and west, the county is surrounded by Vukovar-Srjem, Brod-Posavina, Pozega-Slavonia and Virovitica-Podravina. The name of the administrative unit is formed by combining the names of its capital, Osijek, and the geographical region of Baranja. Known as one of the most prosperous and economically developed parts of the country, Osijek-Baranja relies on intensive agriculture and industrial production to an equal extent. Much of the plain terrain is covered with the famous Slavonian forests, unmatched in the richness of their flora and fauna. A very attractive spot is the Kopacki Rit Nature Park, one of the largest and best maintained wetlands in Europe, comprising lots of ponds along the river Danube. The capital, Osijek, is a modern city on the bank of the river Drava with an exceptional historical heritage. Its old quarter, with a church and buildings in the Baroque style, is a true must-see, as is the huge bridge over the Drava. The most imposing landmark and religious site in the area is St Peter's Cathedral in Dakovo.
