Vukovar-Srijem
The county of Vukovar-Srijem occupies the easternmost end of the country, and is almost entirely encircled by Serbian and Bosnian territory. Only in the west does it border the Croatian counties of Osijek-Baranja and Brod-Posavina. In geographical terms, the county's area consists mostly of the spacious Pannonian plain and the wide valleys of the rivers Danube and Sava. The most attractive feature of this otherwise unpopular and unimpressive region is the enormous concentration of archaeological sites, the oldest of which date back to the end of the Neolithic age. These spots are considered the most important scientific venues in this part of Europe. Tourists will be delighted by the spectacular examples of 18th-Century Baroque architecture and the Franciscan monastery in the administrative centre, Vukovar. The town is also a centre of higher education of national importance.
