Split-Dalmatia
Split-Dalmatia is the second largest and second most populous county of Croatia. It lies in the southern end of the country, between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Adriatic Sea, and includes an impressive number of islands and rocks just off the shore. The terrain is quite diverse, from the elevated region near the Bosnian border to the narrow, rocky coastal strip and numerous islands. The abundance of protected nature areas speaks for the remarkable richness of flora and fauna, as well as the beauty of landscape. The nature park of Biokovo, which is the highest point of the Croatian coastal region, the weird cave complexes on the islands of Hvar and Bisevo and the long narrow canyon of the river Cetina are among the most loved tourist attractions. In the picturesque countryside, visitors can also enjoy one of the spectacular cycling and hiking routes or indulge in wine tasting in a local wine cellar. The capital, Split, is the second largest city in Croatia after Zagreb and the unrivalled economical and cultural centre of Southern Croatia. Its rich historical heritage is to be admired not only in its museums and churches, but also out in the streets, which are lined with charming houses. Nightlife, eating and shopping opportunities are also ample there.
