Pilsen Region
The region of Plzen (German: Pilsen) is situated in the western end of the Czech Republic and covers most of the south-western part of the historical Bohemian region. To the west, it borders Germany, while its other borders are with the regions of Carlsbad, Central Bohemia and South Bohemia. The third-largest of the administrative divisions is predominantly mountainous and hilly, with gentle slopes, low summits and wide river valleys. Cesky Les is the most impressive mountain range, widely known as a well-protected area abounding in hiking trails of all levels. Another highlight is the Bohemian Forest, the highest parts of which are on German territory. The area is admired as a leading venue for sport and relaxation during all seasons. Its romantic scenery, countless crystal-clear lakes and thick forests teeming with game speak for themselves. The Plzen Region offers plenty of historical sights, such as Medieval castles, Baroque palaces and Gothic ruins. Annual folk music festivals and lots of other events offer entertainment throughout the year in the countryside. The capital, Plzen, delights its guests with reputable theatres, unique museums and a cosmopolitan ambience.
