Usti nad Labem Region
The region of Usti nad Labem is situated in the north-western part of the country. On its territory is the northernmost point of the Czech Republic. The region borders Germany and the districts of Carlsbad, Liberec, Plzen and Central Bohemia. Geographically, Usti nad Labem is part of the historical region of Bohemia. Its landscape is varied and includes flat fields as well as comparatively low mountains and woodlands. An interesting landmark is Rip Mountain -- an isolated hill where the first Czechs settled, according to legend. The old Rotunda of St. George is another remarkable site in the vicinity. The village of Racice is renowned as an international venue for rowing and canoeing competitions. A couple of marvelous historical towns, such as Decin with its imposing Medieval castle, bring a large number of tourists to the region of Usti nad Labem. Its capital of the same name is picturesquely located on the confluence of the rivers Bilina and Elbe, from where its name originates. It boasts more than 1,000 years of history and is now a major industrial centre.
