Liberec Region
Liberec is one of the 14 regions in the Czech Republic. It lies in the northernmost end of the country, on the borders with Germany and Poland. The region occupies part of Northern Bohemia and is predominantly flat in the south and mountainous in the north. The highest elevation in the area is the Krkonose Mountains, a reputable destination for ski sports in the winter and hiking during the rest of the year. The whole region is very rich in rivers and waterways, the most important rivers being the Neisse, Smeda and Ploucnice. Like many other parts of the country, the Liberec Region is also famed for its abundance of mineral water sources, most of which are used for tourist purposes. Nearly half the region's territory is covered with thick deciduous forests. Among the most famous products in Liberec are its exquisite glass and jewellery products. The administrative centre after which the region was named is a prime cultural centre, with some of the most respected theatres in the country, plus numerous museums and a splendid botanical garden. Plenty of mansions and estates in the countryside attract visitors from near and far.
