Moravian-Silesian Region
The Moravian-Silesian Region is the most populous administrative unit in the Czech Republic. In terms of population density, it only falls behind the capital, Prague. The region, which has long been the industrial centre of the country, is located in the eastern part of the Czech Republic and borders Poland to the north, Slovakia to the east and the regions of Olomouc to the west and Zlin to the south. The varied landscape of the Moravian-Silesian Region includes broad plains and high mountains, thus presenting some of the most impressive scenery visible anywhere in Central Europe. Despite heavy industrialization and high levels of pollution, especially in Ostrava and its surrounding urban areas, the district also offers pleasant opportunities for sport and relaxation in its well-preserved nature. Most of the mountains along the frontiers with Poland and Slovakia are covered with intact woodlands. The main tourist attractions of the area include the Medieval castles in Hradec nad Moravici, Kravare and Fulnek, plus the enchanting old towns of Stramberk, Novy Jicin and Pribor, the latter of which is known as the birthplace of Sigmund Freud.
