Hovedstaden
Hovedstaden is the smallest, but most populous region in Denmark. The reason for this is that
it includes the capital Copenhagen and a large part of its metropolitan area. The region lies in the
eastern end of the country and encompasses a tiny corner of the Zealand Island, plus the islands
of Amager and Bornholm and several smaller islets. The whole area features the rarely seen location that is in close proximity to its neighbours, Sweden and Germany. Through the imposing bridge that connects Copenhagen and the Swedish city of Malmo, and the dozens of regular ferry lines, it has turned into one of the busiest transportation hubs in Europe. The capital city is the unrivalled jewel in the crown of Danish tourist attractions. Its calm and idyllic ambience, long pedestrian zones and cultural diversity entice millions of tourists every year. The symbol of the city is the statue of the 'Little Mermaid', while the amusement park Tivoli and the numerous royal palaces and medieval castles are the other famous landmarks of Copenhagen. The rest of the region also has amazing sites to offer. One of them is the Kronborg Castle near Helsingor. The setting ofShakespeare's 'Hamlet' is the greatest attraction in the northern country. The island of Bornholm is quite isolated from the rest of Denmark, but boasts extreme diversity and it is often called 'Scandinavia in a Nutshell'. It is also home to the most impressive military fortifications in the country. The latter are the venue of glamorous knight games every year.
