Midtjylland
Midtjylland is the largest and second most populous among the five Danish regions. It comprises
the central part of the mainland plus a number of small islands in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. The remarkably indented coastline of the region is full of fjords with flat shorts, unlike the classical ones in Norway. The countless harbours and fishing villages along the west coast are responsible for almost the entire production of fish and seafood in the country. The gentle hilly areas in the inland count as the most fertile districts of Denmark and are the leading region for production of potatoes and cereal crops. Midtjylland is known for its developing production of wind energy through the wind turbines that dot the landscape. The capital of the region, Viborg, is one of the oldest existing settlements in Denmark. It was founded by the Vikings during the 8th Century and its main landmark is the majestic early medieval Viborg Cathedral. However, the biggest and most important city is Aarhus. It is the second largest city in Denmark after the capital Copenhagen and is the busiest port of the country. Aarhus is home to the tallest church in Denmark, as well as home to plenty of marvellous palaces, museums and theatres.
