Sjælland
The Sjaelland Region encompasses the southern part of Zealand and the islands of Mon, Falster and Lolland. Dozens of islets and rocks are scattered just off the shores of these bigger islands. The region is widely recognised as the warmest part of Denmark. Not surprisingly, its endless sandy beaches and plentiful gulfs are crowded with holidaymakers in the summer months. The intensive tidal activity and the turbulent winds may be a serious holdback, if you intend to spend your holiday sunbathing, but the conditions are perfect for windsurfers. The island of Mon boasts some truly spectacular landscapes, namely the vertical white cliffs of Mons Klint. Lolland is another small island with a fascinating countryside. It lies only 18 kilometres away from Germany and is an important transportation hub in the region. Future plans have been launched to build a bridge to Germany over the strait. The undeniable leader among the tourist destinations in Sjaelland is Roskilde. The small historic town used to be the traditional coronation place for Danish kings during the Middle Ages. Its magnificent Gothic cathedral is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The name Roskilde rings a bell to fans of rock music across Europe, having been the host to one of the biggest music festivals worldwide since 1971.
