Syddanmark
Syddanmark is the second largest administrative division in Denmark. It is the only region of the
country to border another country by land. It borders Germany to the south, the
region of Midtjylland to the north, the North Sea to the west and the Baltic Sea to the east. The
landscapes on the mainland and on the islands in the Baltic Sea are similar - extensive lowlands
with sporadic low hills, strewn with lakes and bogs. Each island has its own appeal - for example, Funen is famous for its virgin forested areas, Romo and Fano have the widest sandy beaches, while Mors is considered an unrivalled natural paradise. The island of Aero with its wonderful sceneries is renowned as the most idyllic spot in Denmark. Some of the significant tourist attractions in the region are the house-museum of Hans Christian Andersen in Odense and the museum of fishing and sailing near Esbjerg. Here lies the oldest town in Denmark: Ribe. History and archaeology buffs should not miss the Runic Stones and Church of Jelling, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The most visited attraction in Denmark is the theme park Legoland near Billund. The world-famous holiday spot for young and old was established more than 50 years ago and attracts growing numbers of visitors every year.
