Lapland
Lapland is the largest, most sparsely populated and undeniably the most famous province in Finland. It occupies the whole northern half of the country, and is surrounded by Sweden, Norway and Russia. Huge areas in Lapland are uninhabited, strewn with thousands of lakes. Only in the northernmost end of the province do separate hills break the monotony. The tranquility and romantic atmosphere here are unrivalled, attracting not only nature-lovers. Of course, the biggest tourist attraction is the home of Santa Claus, near Rovaniemi. Apart from stunning landscapes, plenty of relaxation opportunities in untouched nature and world-famous sites, Lapland has much more to offer. Its principal city, Rovaniemi, is the cultural, industrial and commercial centre of Northern Finland. Excellent skiing conditions, the natural phenomenon Aurora Borealis and the distinctive culture of the Sami people are also worth a mention.
