Franche-Comté
The region of Franche-Comte in France is near the border with Switzerland. It has amazingly beautiful scenery and charming villages and towns. The region is situated between the Vosges Mountains to the north and the Jura (meaning ‘forest’ in Gaulish) range to the south. The landscape is made up of dense pine forests and rolling cultivated fields. The area was inhabited in the Paleolithic age and occupied by the Gauls. As it is near Switzerland, there are many watchmakers, and 85% of French watches are made in the region. Some famous kinds of cheese produced here are Morbier, Comte, Vacherin du Haute-Doubs, Cancoillote, Raclette and Bleu de Gex.
